1. Introduction
This policy describes how LineaHoy (operated by Leonardo Leyva, contact hola@lineahoy.com) collects, uses, and protects your data when you use our mobile app and website. By using LineaHoy you accept the practices described in this document. If you do not agree, please do not use the app.
2. Data we collect
- GPS location: when you grant permission. We use it to detect the nearest port, show you relevant wait times, and — if you authorize it — automatically detect when you start and finish a crossing. This detection may work with the app closed or in the background; you can disable it from your phone settings.
- Crossing data: when you cross the border with detection enabled, we save the start and end time, the duration, and the coordinates of the point where the crossing began. This data is tied to an anonymous device identifier, not to your name.
- Motion data: to tell whether you crossed on foot or by vehicle, we read the motion activity your phone already records (walking, in a vehicle, stationary). It helps us classify the crossing correctly.
- Content you post: reports, comments, reactions, and photos you upload to the Community, along with the alias and avatar you choose to display.
- Camera: with your permission, the app may access the camera so you can take photos and share them in the Community. Photos are only used for the content you post; we do not access the camera in the background.
- Account data: if you create an account with Google or Apple, we receive your email and name to identify you. We do not store your Google or Apple profile picture; the avatar shown is one of the app's illustrated avatars that you choose.
- Device identifier: we generate a local anonymous identifier for the app to function (favorites, reports, abuse control) without requiring you to register.
- Notification token: if you enable notifications, we store a token to deliver them (holiday alerts, community incidents, official notices).
- Device and usage data: model, operating system, app version, and which ports you check, to diagnose issues and improve the service.
3. How we use your data
- Show you wait times relevant to your location.
- Automatically detect your crossings and calculate their duration (if you authorize it).
- Improve time estimates using aggregated, anonymous community data.
- Operate the Community: show your posts to other users.
- Send you notifications you have enabled.
- Detect and prevent abuse, spam, or false reports.
4. Privacy at the border: our commitment
We understand that privacy at the border is sensitive. That's why:
- We never expose identifiable individuals. Crossing data is used in an aggregated, anonymous way; we never show "who" crossed or where a person is.
- We don't ask you to declare which lane you use. We infer what's needed from your app usage, with minimal data.
- Community content is shown without your real name if you choose an alias or anonymous mode.
5. How long we keep your data
- Community posts: stop being shown after 24 hours and are completely deleted from our servers a few days later. Associated photos are deleted along with them.
- Official notices: last for the period we set when publishing them, then are deleted.
- Crossing data: kept anonymously (unlinked from any account) to calculate historical averages that improve estimates for everyone.
- Account data: while your account is active. When you delete it, it is removed (see section 8).
6. Sharing with third parties
To operate the service, we use specialized providers:
- Database (Supabase Inc.) — securely stores information.
- Maps (Mapbox Inc.) — renders the app's maps.
- Web hosting (Vercel Inc.) — serves the site and landing page.
- Notifications (Expo/Apple notification service) — delivers push notifications.
- Public customs data (U.S. Customs and Border Protection) — we only read public wait-time information; we do not share your data with them.
- Advertisers and affiliates — we show ads and affiliate links (such as ARQ, Shopify, Airalo). If you tap an affiliate link, we may receive a commission at no extra cost to you. We don't share your personal information with them.
7. Cookies and local storage
In the app and on the web we use local storage to save your preferences (language, session, favorites). We don't use third-party tracking cookies.
8. Your rights and account deletion
You can delete your account at any time from the app profile. Additionally, under the LFPDPPP (Mexico) and GDPR (where applicable), you have the right of access, rectification, deletion, objection, and portability; write to hola@lineahoy.com to exercise them.
When you delete your account:
- Your account, posts, comments, reactions, and uploaded photos are deleted.
- Your notification token is removed.
- Your crossing data is anonymized (unlinked from your identity) and remains only as aggregated statistical data, with no way to tie it back to you.
9. Security
We take reasonable measures to protect your data: encryption in transit (HTTPS), database access control, and periodic backups. No system is 100% secure, but we commit to minimizing the risk.
10. Children
LineaHoy is for people aged 13 or older. We do not knowingly collect data from children under 13.
11. Changes to this policy
If we modify this policy we'll notify you in the app before the changes take effect. Continued use after an update means you accept the new version.
12. Contact
For any questions about privacy or your personal data: hola@lineahoy.com.
13. Applicable law
This policy is governed by the laws of the United Mexican States, specifically the Federal Law on Protection of Personal Data Held by Private Parties (LFPDPPP).
